A Brief History
Goshen stands today in what was once the heart of the Miami Indian
Territory. Although the city originated in the early 1800s, the
name Goshen was not officially adopted until 1831 when it was named
after an early settler from Goshen, New York. The largest percentage
of early settlers were from Ohio and Pennsylvania, including many
Amish who brought with them religious beliefs and social customs
that are still evident today.
Other important facts to note:
- Goshen is the county seat for Elkhart County.
- Goshen is often called the Maple City because of the large number
of maple trees planted over the last 25 years.
- In a recent Reader's Digest list, Goshen was recognized as one
of the top 50 family-friendly areas in the nation.
- The population of Goshen, according to the 2002 census, is 51,876.
The population of Elkhart County (2002) is 184,186.
Housing
Goshen balances a small-town atmosphere with high-quality housing
opportunities. Affordable housing includes everything from historic
homes to carefully planned neighborhood developments, townhouses
and golf course subdivisions. Neighborhoods are centered around
the community's high-quality elementary schools.

Transportation & Travel
Goshen is located at the junction of Indiana State Roads 4, 15 and
119 and U.S. Highway 33. It is just 15 miles south of the Indiana
Toll Road (Interstate 80/90).
Major airports can be found in Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland and Indianapolis.
Goshen Municipal Airport offers flight school, business charters,

Schools & Education
The education of our children is vital to the Goshen community.
Parents of young children have a wide choice of preschool availability,
including programs in area churches, parochial schools, Goshen College
Kindergarten and the local Montessori school.
Public school enrollment for grades 1-12 is about 5,000. In 1997,
area schools conducted a $35 million expansion program. Five of
Goshen's seven elementary schools have recently undergone extensive
renovations to accommodate rising enrollments. All seven participate
in the Prime Time program which ensures educationally sound teacher-to-student
ratios.
Located on a 26-acre campus, Goshen High School has earned a reputation
for excellence locally and throughout the state. The gifted and
talented programs, an innovative curriculum, vocational training,
work-study and mentorship programs are just a sampling of what Goshen
High School offers its students.

Goshen
College has received national recognition for academics in U.S.
News and World Report magazine as one of "America's Best Colleges."
Founded by Mennonites in 1894, Goshen College is a fully accredited,
four-year liberal arts college with an enrollment of about 1,000
students. Majors are offered in 31 areas. In addition to Goshen
College, four other colleges and universities are located in close
proximity (within 30 minutes) to the Goshen area.

Business & Industry
Goshen is nestled in one of the finest agricultural sectors in the
nation and the center of the industrial growth belt between Chicago
and Toledo. As a county seat, it is the primary trade center for
many surrounding communities.
Commercial entities in the Goshen area are extremely diverse. Although
agriculture is still thriving in the countryside surrounding Goshen,
the number of industrial companies is increasing as evidenced by
several new industrial parks. Local major employers include Johnson
Controls, Goshen General Hospital, Bayer Corporation, Coachmen Industries
and Dana Corporation.
The city of Goshen has made a tremendous investment in upgrading
its infrastructure. Unemployment is low and wage rates are considered
moderate compared to many parts of the country.

Recreation & Shopping
Year-round recreation is available at five major county parks and
17 city parks. Activities include tennis, softball, baseball, archery,
swimming, picnicking, biking, walking, cross country skiing, ice
skating, sledding and snowmobiling. The Elkhart River and nearby
lakes offer a variety of water activities such as canoeing, fishing
and boating.
In addition, the College Recreation-Fitness Center and the YWCA
offer a variety of coeducational recreational and fitness programs
for all age groups.
Two 18-hole golf courses, Black Squirrel (public) and Maplecrest
(private) are located in Goshen. There are an additional eight golf
courses and three country clubs within 20 minutes of downtown Goshen.
Goshen provides a wide variety of shopping experiences, from specialty
shops and boutiques to department stores. Within 35 minutes of Goshen,
there are three malls featuring major department stores, retail
outlets and restaurants. There are five major grocery stores in
Goshen.

Worship, Culture & Values
Sixty-one churches from 34 religious denominations offer worship
opportunities for everyone interested in a church relationship.
Inter-church efforts and community fellowship are the basis of the
community's strong spiritual tradition.
The Goshen area is also steeped in the Amish and Mennonite heritage.
It is one of three areas in the United States with a large concentration
of Old Order Amish people. Residents and visitors to Goshen benefit
from the Amish dedication to creativity and the products of their
artistic talents.
In addition, the community is entertained by local dance troupes,
musical ensembles and theater groups. A local art association, area
museums and art fairs further foster appreciation for the arts.
